They call him Soulo, the 24 year old rapper from Auburn, Ga. who is sure to change the way people view hip hop. His smooth sounds describe his many personal experiences and views while maintaining a chill and refreshingly old school vibe. "It's not about makin that money, how long your chain is, pullin up on dubs, or your hat that matches your shoes. That's all just a bunch of commercial b.s. that a lot of artists conform to in hopes of getting signed, when in reality they just sound exactly like the millions of other people doing the same thing. Music should come from your soul and should show listeners who you are as an individual. When people listen to my music, they know without a doubt who I am."
Soulo, having been "solo" since late 2009, is finally ready to release his first "solo" album in early 2011. He's spent a little more than a year finding out who he is as an artist, and what an artist he's become. Every one of his songs have a clear topic of discussion in which many people can relate to, whether you are a young school student or a middle aged businessman. There is one song though, called "No Topic", in which all content structure is turned to randomness, and he some how makes the incredible hulk, steve urcle, and e85 ethanol flow together so nicely. His self titled album will be available on his website (therealsoulo.com) and (cdbaby.com).
Soulo hasn't always been interested in hip hop. He actually spent his early years listening to hard rock. Around the age of 14, he moved into a new house where he started hanging out with his new neighbor and schoolmate, Bob Schleitwiler. It was at Bob's house that Soulo (Steven Simpson) was introduced to the now old school Outkast, Ludacris, Bone Thugs in Harmony, and many other hip hop artists. Rap wasn't new to Soulo, but this was the first time he had a growing love for hip hop. He and Bob eventually started rapping and recording songs on some not so professional equipment and actually sold their music at school. They didnt take their hobby very seriously, but when classmates responded positively to their songs, it changed everything.
After highschool, the two friends stepped up their rap game. They formed the two-man group "Chronic Town" and put together a much more presentable demo, which they would spread around at various performances in the Atlanta area. In the winter of '08, over five hundred artists auditioned for the "Wanna B A Star"competition held in Atlanta. Of all those who auditioned, only twenty were selected. The competition lasted two months, and each week eliminations were made by a panel of judges. "Chronic Town" surpassed their competition and placed 2nd. After a Chronic Town performance, Sal with "Disturbin Tha Peace" (Wanna B A Star judge) was quoted "I finally get this sh*t. I like the hook, I like y'all's energy and I think everyone can relate. Y'all really did your thing tonight."
The group "Chronic Town" broke up in 2009, leaving Soulo (Steven Simpson) with one option, to go "solo". This was a new beginning, and he felt the need to completely reinvent himself (hints the name Soulo). He has grown as a person and it shows through his music. Since late 2009, Soulo has performed in many spots around the Atlanta area and continues to impress crowds with his unique sounds and high energy performances. He has been featured on 89.3 fm's "The Ridin Dirty Show" on friday mornings in Atlanta, Ga. and continues to appear on the show to promote his highly anticipated album, which will be available at (therealsoulo.com) and (cdbaby.com)
