I have so many "favorites" I'm not even sure that it's rational to call them favorites any more.
Let me introduce you to the best artist I discovered in 2011 though--even though he has been around since the turn of the century. I am absolutely FLOORED that he is not more well-known, but that only reinforces the fact that the music industry is woefully inadequate in bringing the best artists to our attention these days.
His name is Ike Reilly, and he has albums under his own name and as "The Ike Reilly Assassination." If Bob Dylan played with Cracker, it would probly come out something like Ike Reilly. Yeah, it's that good.
He still has a FREE sampler album available on amazon as an mp3 download (just search for "Ike's Digital Collection" and it should come up)--but be warned, you will then feel the urge to spend about $70 to get all the rest of his albums like I did. (Don't worry, if you do, it's all pretty good.) If you don't like Ike, you just don't like rock and roll.
Here's an overview of the free sampler:
From the album "Sparkle in the Finish":
1. I Don't Want What You Got (Goin On) 10/10
One of his top 5 songs, contains one of his best-ever lyrics: "...Jerry Lee Lewis with his balls on fire in the back of a Rocket '88 with an out-of-state plate and an underage date..."
2. The Boat Song (We're Getting Loaded) 8/10
Any song that contains a reference to "Death of a Salesman" deserves some credit, and this one is no exception. "Take the vulgar boatmen and the drunken showmen and the Willy Lomans of rock and roll and put 'em on a ship..."
3. Whatever Happened to the Girl in Me 6/10
This is one of the easiest songs to get hooked on, but it was also one of the quickest to start feeling like a throwaway to me. It is one of the few songs from this sampler to have a video on youtube though, so in case you're not ready to commit to a free album, you can sample that first.
From the album "Junkie Faithful":
4. God and Money 7/10
A slower reflection on values that clearly demonstrates his Dylanesque roots. If you're a Beatles/Oasis fan, this one will probly appeal to you too.
5. Kara Dean 5/10
Another kind of a throwaway tune, and in my opinion, the weakest track on the free sampler. Keep in mind, though, that 5/10 for Ike Reilly is still twice as good as 10/10 for Justin Bieber.
6. Suffer for the Trust 7/10
I think this is kind of a worker protest song, but it's couched in some deeply metaphorical imagery. "They don't pay us enough to suffer for the trust, I'm gonna take what's mine before the cause gets just. Take what's mine before I run out of time, before the face on the monument... pays me a compliment."
From the album "We Belong to the Staggering Evening":
7. Broken Parakeet Blues 10/10
His most Dylanesque song ever--and probly the most Dylanesque song ever since Dylan himself--is this sentimental war protest. "The houses are filled with flattering hosts/in tight shirts and compliments for soldiers and ghosts/up on the high ground blowing their loads/for the cowgirls left back home."
8. Valentine's Day in Juarez 6/10
From Bob Dylan to Jimmy Buffet, think "Margaritaville" on this one. "We got the cocaine, oxycontin, mushrooms, marijuana, vodka plastic pop-off twist..."
9. You're So Plain 8/10
This one is so catchy, you'll be singing along before the end of the first listen. It doesn't have as much substance as some of his more thoughtful numbers, but it's not short on fun.
From the album "Poison the Hit Parade":
10. Hip Hop Thighs #16 10/10
This Mariano Rivera of album closers is axually a retooling of a song from his first album (2001's "Salesmen and Racists"). It is such a great song that there are a few times in it when I could axually tell what the next few words were going to be before they were sung--it's just that perfectly constructed. "Hip hop tore up his mind/thought he was dancing with Patsy Cline/not a local girl off the police line/cheek to cheek in that three-four time/trying to make love it ain't from limes/but no limey ever made nothing like 'I Walk the Line".
Enjoy...
Until next time...
