music,
i agree completely on grant green.
the three great jazz guitarists of the 1950's/60's were grant green, kenny burrell and wes montgomery. i recommend all three.

jack,
django rheinhardt, the gypsy jazz guitarist is indeed one of the greats of the early days of jazz. one should try to find as many of the "quintet of the hot club of france" recordings as one can. that was the group started by rheinhardt and violinist stephane grappelli and also included joseph rheinhardt, django's brother.
in addition, to rheinhardt, another guitarist of particular note was the original inovator of the jazz guitar in america. charlie christian, who was best known as a member of benny goodman's band.

Charlie Christian is essential
lately Jazz wise I really been loving Erroll Garner on piano. His album "Concert By The Sea" is amazing.
Also been listening to a lot of Betty Carter, Johnny Hartman, Rashaan Roland Kirk, Sun Ra and Coltrane. Could make a ton of album recommendations if any is interested. Jazz is a never ending thing.
It's interesting the different perspectives on what constitutes an "old" jazz artist. The 1960's and earlier seems to be the consensus. So I would include; Art Tatum, Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk and Fats Waller.
