best overdrive guitar pedal?

im a drummer so i dont really know much about guitars, though my friend wants a new overdrive pedal, anyone got any suggestions?

i like the Ds-1 of boss but i prefer the distortion of my engl screamer 50. It sound better

Many good ones, many bad.I have the Sansamp GT2, works for me, more an ampsim overdrive. Sounds great with a cleaner amp (Roland JC 120). If you have a tubeamp, try a tubescreamer (classic) or something with just a bit of boost.
Really depends what amp you're playing. If direct, def try an ampsim of some kind.

one cheap choice is the fabtone pedal. it sounds pretty good. but of course a tube-preamp would be much better!

the boss pedal its pretty cheap and sounds nice. but the best one i think is t-rex

I use the Line 6 Uber Metal Pedal.

Very contour-able sounds plus a switchable sound gate. You can get it used from guitar center for about 20$.

Its solidly built and perfect for recording or live sound. You can get great Metallica-ish sounds out of it or just simple distortion if you want.
