why jazz?...do you like it?
Huge fan here as well!
Thing about jazz is that it can encompass so many
different music genre.
Electronica, Pure Jazz,
Jazz metal, Progressive jazz,
clasical jazz.
I like Jazz in F, also F# and Eb
I also like jazz in C with an A# accidental.
I wonder what key that is?
It is a diverse genre-encompassing vocal and instrumental, chamber and orchestral, old-timey to avant-garde, black and white, American, African, European and Asian (probably Australian also-I'm not sure about that), from simple tunes to complex polyphony. The strong synchopated rhythmic element that draws many to rock and hip-hop, was first introduced to western ears in jazz (a fusion of African and European-American traditions). Also the instrumental prowess of the great jazz performers is truly astounding-with the improvisational solos serving to make each outing a new creation, never to be duplicated. Add to that, some of the great compositional minds that have applied themselves to the rich history of jazz makes it at least an equal to the full classical tradition of Bach, Mozart, etc. Whatever other type of music you like, from blues to rap, country to classical, rock or new-age, jazz has influenced it.
That's so true--and I say that without being a particular fan of jazz myself, but I know its importance as one of the roots of rock and roll. In fact, it was that "strong syncopated rhythmic element" you mentioned that led parents, teachers and pastors to condemn rock and roll as leading youth astray into dens of "black music" (the jazzhouses of the day) and therefore the "devil's music."
Of course, they din't seem to realize that negro gospel music from the black church was also a strong influence on the formation of rock and roll, but then moral authorities have rarely been exempt from hypocrisy.
Until next time...
