Rediscovered an old collection album I have on Thelonious Monk . I love his compositions and playing . There's even some performances he did with Coleman Hawkins on there and a couple with Charlie Christian .... Next up is Eric Dolphy , then Charles Mingus ... It's great to hear these albums after such a long time
That reminds me of my college years, when I first discovered Monk-I was especially fond of his solo piano work.
I really like his solo piano work too, but love to hear how the other members in his groups interpret and improvise over his harmonically and rhythmically challenging works. His longtime saxophonist Charlie Rouse is amazing . I think he's underrated , or overlooked but he plays so naturally and beautifully over some of the most quirky tunes
The most amazing thing about Monk's playing is the unique way of touching the keyboard and the use of "harsh" dissonances in jazz..
as is his composing-he was pretty eccentric but also a genius.
